Overall:
James is a man who has lived a long while, with years he doesn't even remember. He's lost many friends over the years, still unsure of where he really came from, how he got to the planet he was found on. He's a very kind person who tries his best at everything, feeling indebted to the Discovery for taking him from the planet. Jim is highly loyal to the ship and the good of the crew on the ship, and the instant he feels he is a danger to the ship or anyone the crew, he will request to be dropped off on the nearest planet.
This kind man also has a bit of a dark side. He holds grudges until the one he is holding it against dies, not wanting to forgive, even for something that happened many, many years prior. Jim puts off an exterior of happy and cheery, while really, he's thinking hard about something else, and telling himself to control his temper if any little thing happens that could get a rise out of him. Jim is one of the worst people at holding his tongue, either when happy, sad, or especially when angry. He has a very hot temper, which he cannot seem to control very well, but when he's angry he says some things he might regret. Despite his inability to hold his tongue, if he is asked to keep a secret, he can keep it. He just likes to talk and sometimes will say things he doesn't mean, caught up in the moment. The most recent example of this: he told a friend of his that he loved her, when he had just realized the solution to a problem he had been having. He didn't really mean it. It just sort of slipped out.
Jim keeps it a secret that he spends his nights trying to remember back before the planet, who sent him there, and why he was there. He also keeps the secret of the powers he has learned he possess. The previous captain, the one right before Kilin Michael Brooks, discovered this one time, dropping in on Jim who was practicing his "powers" in his room. The captain took Jim's secret to the dead. But anyways. While he trusts the crew, he decidedly hides various parts of him to the crew, such as his powers, his strength and his obsession to know where he came from. Jim is truly a nice guy, but will hide when he's feeling down, or when he's thinking about something that he feels is a private matter, or something that would make others not like him. He likes being liked, and loves attention. However, Jim is also not confident in his abilities at all, despite showing that he can do things correctly. He doubts himself plenty of times, and when giving advice to another or stating a fact, he always puts on a disclaimer that he could be wrong.
Jim likes talking, playing cards, and feeling like he belongs. There are many times when he feels like an outsider and that everyone would be better off without him. Also, James makes comments about those around him such as "silly little" insert alien name here. He doesn't mean offense, but he might not realize he's being offensive, feeling that he's just stating the truth. Sometimes he'll be a little bit too honest people, to be completely truthful, and will point out flaws and tell them what he really does think.
How we deal with death is at least as important
as how we deal with life.

Overall History:
Jim was found on a rogue planet 134 years ago by the Discovery. He remembered living on the planet for a long while. The earliest memory he had was the monsters being friendly and being his family, but one day the monsters seemed to turn into his worst nightmare and he wished to leave the planet forever. He hid on the planet for a long while, when the Discovery found him. They saved him from the monsters. Whatever the monsters were. Today, Jim believes they may have been created by him after the discovery of certain powers he has different than anyone else on board.
Jim traveled on the Discovery learning as much as he could, and found that machines and building stuff was what he truly liked the most of everything. He began tinkering around with some simple supplies that he was given for what he wanted to do. Nothing that could be used against the ship... at least they believed it so. Jim drew up plans one day, overhearing the captain and some other officers in the mess hall talking about Earth and how contact had been lost. Within a week he presented his plans to the captain, plans of a communications device that could reach Earth. After the chief engineer and several others looked over it, they agreed that it would work and soon construction began, Jim helping the engineers build the large device. The first test made sparks, the second an explosion, and just when they were going to close the project down, in came a transmission in response from Earth. It was a huge success. The ship received plans for a slip stream engine, and the captain offered him a spot in their academy. Jim decided against it, not feeling it was his place to become a member of the crew, especially since his origins were unknown and could cause danger in the future.
Jim became a consultant, refusing the honorary crew member status offered to him, and became a waiter at the mess hall. When the captain died a few years back, Jim felt that he was to blame for not doing anything to save him, having been busy repairing a part of the ship when the captain was killed. He actually knew of the aliens that had done it, and could have prevented it. How he knew of them, Jim did not know, but when he was told afterwards, he knew a lot about these aliens, which has been happening more and more lately. A little while before the previous captain's death, Jim discovered he had powers. He could teleport from one place to another by just thinking of it hard enough. One time he even repeated a day on accident. Sometimes he didn't even know what he did to cause something to happen, but began working on controlling it, fearing it was time to abandon the Discovery, posing a danger with these out of control powers. He could move things with just his mind, teleport, repeat days, and make things disappear. Now he has these powers mostly underwraps, these powers having been present before, but grew quickly when he reached 200 years old (though he believed himself to be 120 years at the time).
Information of his past will be revealed on a later date during a sub-plot.
